A new collaboration with the New York Philharmonic is coming!

Giants Are Small and the New York Philharmonic announce a new collaboration: Stravinsky’s ballet Petrushka, which will be conducted by Alan Gilbert, directed by Doug Fitch and produced by Edouard Getaz in June 2013.

The show will be partially based on a 2008 workshoped version, directed in 2008 by Doug Fitch and presented by the University of Maryland, in collaboration with conductor James Ross.

WHAT IS LIVE ANIMATION?
Imagine that you watch a puppeteer/animator play with a character in front of a camera on stage, and you can see both his manipulation and the result of the image captured by the camera projected in very large scale.

Now imagine that an actor is interacting with the projected image created by the puppeteer that you are watching. This is live animation. It is like a cartoon suddenly comes to life: the characters pop out of the book, the landscape in the background starts moving… and all of this is created in front of your very eyes.

You watch the making of and you see the result at the same time.

BRINGING A REVOLUTIONARY APPROACH TO LIVE SHOWS...

Giants Are Small’s is constantly experiencing with new technologies to create new approaches to storytelling. Below: special effects workshop, spring 2010.

Special FX used by Giants Are Small in combinaison with live animation include 3D projection, infra red tracking technology (above) and some old magic tricks as simple as… blue screens!

An excerpt from Peter and The Wolf, where blue screen effects allow to combine live animation with pre-recorded video content.

Blue screen FX can be used in conjunction with 3D projection: above, a puppeteer/animator manipulates a miniature helicopter in front of a mini HD camera. The helicopter gets projected in stereoscopic 3D; the audience sees the manipulation while watching the helicopter literally fly above their heads!

HOW IS IT DONE?

First, we storyboard the show and all the sequences of live animation. Then, we break down the entire storyboard to determine how many elements are going to be animated and filmed on stage.

Doug Fitch designs the characters, the landscapes, the models, etc. so that our teams of illustrators, model makers, painters can start create each element that we will film during the show and that we will see projected in large scale in real time.

Characters are then developed for various situations. Here we see a series of paparazzis developed for our adaptation of Prokofieff’s Peter and the Wolf.

Elements are cut out by hand (or laser ..)

Or we sculpt in 3D…
Here you see the initial steps of the fabrication of a skull for The Grand Macabre.

Then we start testing how the various elements will look once filmed and projected. Here you see a the skull in front of the camera lense.

We start rehearsing the manipulation of the elements that we have created. This involves not only our puppeteers/animators, but also the lighting designer, the director of photography, the cameraman, etc. Most of these people end up on stage, performing.

The “video village”, as we call it, allows us to switch from one camera to another, create special effects in real time, control the lights, etc.

We now start rehearsing with the actors (or singers, when we do an opera!). That’s the moment when the live animation component starts merging with everything else that will happen on stage during the show.

For the Grand Macabre, we set up a giant oval screen, onto which the live animation gets projected.

LE GRAND MACABRE ELECTED BEST CLASSICAL PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR BY NEW YORK MAGAZINE!
Giants Are Small was invited by New York Philharmonic’s Music Director and conductor Alan Gilbert to create an adaptation of the surrealist opera Le Grand Macabre.

The show, which premiered in New York City in May 2010, turned out to be an immediate sensation. The New York Times describes it as “a major event on the New York Cultural scene”, “an instant philharmonic milestone”, while the New York Magazine calls it “a multimedia spectacular” and Opera News “a substantial hit”.

Combining – on stage – a symphonic orchestra, opera singers and live animation, Giants Are Small’s adaptation of Ligeti’s modern opera redefines in many ways how opera can be performed and made accessible to a broader audience.

Costumes designed by Tony Award winner Catherine Zuber and lighting by Clifton Taylor.

The show is scheduled to tour in Europe as of 2012.

Annie Hamburger
Before forming Big Heart Theatrical, Annie Hamburger was Executive Vice President of Walt Disney Creative Entertainment from 2000-2008, the global organization which was founded with her arrival to the Disney Company.

Prior to joining The Walt Disney Company, Hamburger was the Artistic Director of La Jolla Playhouse in 1999-2000.

From 1986 to 1999, Hamburger was the Founder and Executive Producer of En Garde Arts in New York City where she won international acclaim for large scale, "site-specific" productions which resurrrected defunct performing spaces and brought attention to important landmarks, historic streets and striking architectural structures.

CHRIS FITCH DESIGN
Since the very beginning of Giants Are Small, Chris Fitch has been instrumental in conceiving our toy theatres, dolly tracks and other fantastic mechanical devices used for the purpose of live animation – including our famous “cloud machines” and hand-cranked wonders.

Chris Fitch is a sculptor and inventor in the Boston area. Beyond his work in sculpture, his creative reach has touched upon stop motion animation, science museum exhibits, design of teaching tools for science and math education, and independent invention.

Doug Fitch has worked in media ranging from architecture and opera to puppetry and food. EDOUARD GETAZ

Edouard Getaz was born in Lausanne (Switzerland) and now lives in New York, where he works as a producer and a director, with his company Incopix. For the last two years, his main focus has been the development of Giants Are Small, both as a company and a brand.

As a producer, Edouard has constantly been at the forefront of new trends in live entertainment. In the mid-nineties, he produced for the Montreux Jazz Festival one of the first multi-locations live music event ever streamed on the Internet. Edouard has developed and produced a wide variety of shows, from major fashion shows, music festivals (incl. Cully Jazz Festival) and concerts to giant projections on historical buildings.

Later, Edouard co-founded an event communication agency, Creatives, which quickly turned into one of the most successful companies of its kind in the French speaking part of Switzerland. He was responsible for the Artistic direction of the agency for five years, before returning to the fields of live and filmed entertainment.

The Giants Are Small hit adaptation of Sergei Prokofieff’s masterpiece “Peter and The Wolf” is now in development for a tent show touring in North America and, eventually, Broadway.

Giants Are Small, Big Heart Theatrical and And-Entertainment have teamed up to launch what will be one of the first staged shows feturing live animation in the US.

Directed by Giants Are Small’s Artistic director Doug Fitch, the show is scheduled to start touring in 2012.

The upcoming version, of a total duration of approx. 90 minutes, includes a prequel that places the entire story in present time Hollywood, while weaving together excerpts from some of the greatest symphonic masterpieces.

The show is a fully staged theatrical spectacular in a 1400 seats tent.

THE SOLDIER’S TALE
Composed by Igor Stravinsky

Presented at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall in 2005, with the New York Philharmonic.
Subsequently presented in Ottawa, with the Canada’s National Arts Center Orchestra (2006).

Stravinsky’s famous tale was presented by Giants Are Small as a combination of symphonic music, live animation and stage performance by F.
